UK and India relaunch trade talks in Delhi
The United Kingdom and India have officially resumed negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) in New Delhi on February 24, 2025, after a year-long hiatus. UK Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds met with Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss the framework for the agreement, aiming to more than double bilateral trade within the next decade.
The primary objectives for the UK include reducing tariffs on exports such as food, automobiles, and whisky, as well as securing enhanced access for British service providers. Conversely, India is seeking a social security agreement for its workers in the UK and assurances that Indian students can remain in the country for two years post-graduation to gain practical experience.
These discussions mark the 15th round of negotiations since their initiation in January 2022. The talks had been paused in March 2024 due to impending elections in both nations. The resumption of these negotiations underscores a mutual commitment to strengthening economic ties and capitalizing on the growth potential of both economies.
While immigration policies have been a point of contention in previous discussions, both parties have expressed optimism about reaching a mutually beneficial agreement. The successful conclusion of the FTA is anticipated to significantly boost bilateral trade and investment, fostering economic growth and collaboration between the UK and In
