Rat miners roped in for rescue operation at Srisailam Left Bank canal collapse

In response to the recent collapse of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel in Telangana's Nagarkurnool district, a specialized team of "rat-hole" miners has been mobilized to assist in the rescue operations. These miners, renowned for their expertise in navigating narrow and confined spaces, have previously been instrumental in successful rescue missions, notably during the Uttarkashi tunnel collapse in Uttarakhand in October 2024.

The incident, which occurred on February 22, 2025, has left eight workers trapped within the tunnel. Despite continuous efforts by the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local teams, the challenging conditions have necessitated the inclusion of these specialized miners. The presence of water and debris within the tunnel has significantly impeded progress, making the expertise of the rat-hole miners crucial to the operation.

Telangana Minister Jupally Krishna Rao has expressed concerns regarding the survival chances of the trapped workers, describing them as "very, very, very, very remote." However, rescue teams remain committed to the operation, employing advanced equipment such as endoscopic and robotic cameras to locate and reach the individuals.

The situation remains critical, with rescue teams working tirelessly to navigate the hazardous conditions within the tunnel. The collaboration of various specialized units underscores the complexity of the operation and the concerted efforts being made to reach the trapped workers.
