The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj concluded today, February 26, coinciding with the festival of Maha Shivratri. On this final day, over 1.3 crore (13 million) devotees took a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. This sacred ritual is believed to cleanse participants of sins and facilitate spiritual renewal.
Throughout the 45-day festival, which commenced on January 13, the event witnessed an unprecedented turnout, with official estimates indicating that more than 65 crore (650 million) pilgrims attended, setting a global benchmark for religious gatherings.
Despite the massive influx of devotees, the festival was marred by a tragic stampede last month, resulting in at least 30 fatalities. In response, authorities implemented enhanced crowd control measures to ensure the safety of participants during the remaining days of the event.
